Welcoming our US Interns Andrew and Rika!

10/7/2014

AndyAndrew McGowan (pictured above) volunteered with HCLC for a month in June 2014.

Andrew is a PhD physics student who recently converted to studying law at the University of Richmond School of Law. Over the course of his internship with HCLC, Andrew worked closely with Senior Housing Solicitor Wendy Pettifer and was an invaluable member of our team.

As well as his academic interests in physics and law, Andrew possesses a keen interest in history and constitutional issues. He was therefore very pleased to be able to visit London and find out more about its history.

Rika Calvin (pictured right) comes from Milwaukee in the US state of Wisconsin. Rika is currently studying for her Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science & Philosophy (with a minor in Sociology) at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.

Since June, Rika has been an intern at HCLC, working predominately with Senior Housing Solicitor Nathaniel Mathews on housing law cases and some welfare benefits' cases.  She's shadowed Rika CalvinNathaniel at client appointments in the office and at court (including the Royal Courts of Justice) and has also observed an immigration tribunal appeal at York House in Feltham.

Rika has also helped Nathaniel to draft letters and put together draft bundles for court hearings. Since she's been in London, Rika has visited Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, been on the London Eye and taken a London River Cruise.

She has also visited Cardiff and will shortly be visiting Oslo (capital of Norway) for the first time. Rika has been particularly struck by London's diversity and the fact that Londoners start and finish their working days later than in the United States.  She says she has also really enjoyed eating Chicken Rogan Josh in London's many top quality Indian restaurants.

A big thank you to both Andrew and Rika for all of their enthusiasm and hard work for HCLC!
