Meet The Interns - Ishaq & Ervin!

15/4/2014

Irwin and Ishaq January 2014 HCLC interns HCLC is pleased to introduce our fabulous interns Ishaq Shah  and Ervin Gjoleka! Ishaq Shah (left of photo) became a HCLC intern since January 2014.

Ishaq has been working exclusively with HCLC's Senior Immigration Advisor Hilton von Herbert on immigration and asylum cases. Two of the more complex cases Ishaq has been working on have involved non-European Economic Area (EEA) nationals who - as a result of becoming victims of domestic violence perpetrated by their EEA national spouses - have found themselves at risk of removal from the UK.

Ishaq says he enjoyed working on these cases - despite their difficulty - because of the relief he saw the clients experience when they found out that their immigration problems had been resolved.  Before Ishaq came to HCLC, he had worked at the Home Office as a Senior Case Worker.  He then decided to study law and attended London Metropolitan University where he obtained a Graduate Diploma in Law and his Legal Practice Course qualification.  Ishaq hopes to become a legal aid lawyer specialising in the immigration law and civil liberties/public law fields.

We are delighted that since beginning his HCLC internship, Ishaq has been offered a position at a private solicitors' firm. Ervin Gjoleka (right of photo) has been an intern with HCLC since January, predominantly assisting Senior Housing Solicitors Nathaniel Mathews and Wendy Pettifer with their housing law cases.  Ervin has answered calls on HCLC's telephone adviceline, prepared letters of advice to clients, carried out home visits and filed documents at court.

Until recently, Ervin was heavily involved in assisting Nathaniel Mathews represent sixteen Columbian tenants who were evicted from their shared accommodation - illegally - all on the same day.  Thanks to Nat and Ervin's interventions, the Colombians were awarded compensation for the illegal eviction.  Before Ervin came to HCLC, he had completed his Legal Practice Course at the College of Law where he specialised in private client law, family law and commercial law.  Ervin also volunteered with the Citizens Advice Bureau in Camden for 4 years and last year successfully completed the London to Brighton Annual bike ride to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.  Ervin hopes to become a solicitor working in the commercial field.

Thank you Ishaq and Ervin for all your hard work!
