Hackney Community Law Centre is recruiting two legal interns for the term 8th April to 28th June 2019.

An Open Evening is being held at the Law Centre on the evening of Monday 4th March from 7.00 p.m.

The evening is usually a 15 – 20 minute informal talk about what the Law Centre does and how it is funded. It is also an opportunity to hear what is required of our interns and how our scheme works.  The evening usually has up to 10 - 15 potential candidates sitting in.  Attendance at the open evening is designed to answer questions that potential candidates may have about the centre, our work but most importantly, what our intern programme involves.

Our internship programme will not be leading to paid full time work in the Centre or to guaranteed training contracts.  Interns are expected to commit to a full working day, four days a week.  Our ideal prospects are individuals currently looking to progress themselves as legal professionals.

For those unable to attend on 4th March it is still possible to apply for selection at the centre but all prospective candidates will be expected to attend a one to one interview which should last about 30 minutes or so and this will be followed by a standard written test in English.  The law will not be examined.

Given the nature of our work and the pace set here, all interns must have completed their LL.B or GDL (or equivalent) by the time they attend for interview.  The interviews are to be conducted on Thursday 21st March.  There will be interview slots organised throughout the day.

Interviews cannot be conducted over Skype or other remote circumstances.  We apologise for this.  Those interested can please email an up to date CV in word or pdf format to: admin@hclc.org.uk. Please state put the words “Internship April to June 2019” in the subject header.  Last day for CVs is Saturday 16th March 2019.

The law centre will be providing actual work experience from the first day of the commitment and so some level of maturity and communication skills will be a standard requirement.   As our volunteers and interns will be assisting solicitors and experienced caseworkers, aptitude for written text as well as reading up on the relevant law is required.

The commitment is a full 12 weeks long.  Prospective candidates are to pay attention to the dates set.  There is not going to be an opportunity to negotiate an alternative period.  If these dates are likely to conflict with other pre-arranged schedules i.e. weddings abroad, foreign travel, rigorous or demanding caring schedules or exams, we recommend you apply at another time as we try and keep opportunities as regular as we can.   As those applying to volunteer with us expect to get references to boost their chances in the industry, we equally expect honesty in return.

The current programme is April through to end of June.  This is a very demanding time for anyone undertaking rigorous study and so these individuals are advised to avoid applying at this time.

We are currently working with the City Law School and have a full capacity of day placements at present.
